SRI GIRARD HINDU TEMPLE

Columbus has a connection to Hindu culture the goes back to J. Irwin Miller and Alexander Girard traveling to India and collecting the beautiful tapestry and craft. In 1956, Girard curated an exhibit at MOMA using many items from the Miller collection. The combination of Indian ornament and modern design are woven into the history of the town.

This design is taking in the context of Gerard’s Washington Storefront Project and the green space within the downtown area. The temple looks to the east, facing a portion of First Christian Church designed by Eliel Saarinen in 1942.  A view from the north on fifth street frames the facade of the worship space. A garden of the 9 planetary gods will greet visitors at the entrance. Natural light pours a Girard inspired terracotta Jali brick as well as a courtyard space off the lower level.
